work the color changes by carrying the dropped color along the top of
the crochet stitches from the previous row, working them into the crochet as if you were starting a new color.

1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 3, *switch to black, 1 sc
in each of next 5, switch to red, 1 sc in each of next 5*, switch to
black, 1 sc in each of next 4, 1 sc in turning ch, ch 1, turn (you
now have 5 sc in each color)
rows 2 & 4:
1 sc in each of next 4, *switch
to red, 1 sc in each of next 5, switch to black, 1 sc in each of next
5*, switch to red, 1 sc in each of next 4, 1 sc in turning ch, ch 1,
turn

5*, switch to black, 1 sc in each of next 4, 1 sc in turning ch, ch 1,
turn
you now have 8 squares
across, 4 black and 4 red. for the next 5 rows work the colors
opposite to form a checkerboard pattern. repeat these groups until
you have a total of 8 squares vertically.
|
MAKE A TIE:
chain a long length of sts to create a tie.
About yarn
choices: this checkerboard
looks great with contrasting types of yarn. Choose a yarn that is
kinda fuzzy for the black sections and a linen type for the red.
It adds a more interesting look and feel to the board, and helps keep
the faux checkers on their respective squares ;-)
